Going out with style, DIS brings Kuwaiti producer and artist Fatima Al Qadiri together with Oakland-based writer and artist Brontez Purnell for an outrageous evening of live performances, music, and celebration. The evening also includes a screening of comedian and artist Casey Jane Ellison’s new series, MAD with Casey Jane Ellison: Mothers and Daughters.
Al Qadiri merges conceptual explorations of gender performativity and non-binary drag with imminently danceable music as she channels “Shaneera,” an extreme femme alter ego birthed in her acclaimed EP of the same name, queer arabic slang that translates roughly as “evil queen.” This marks the west coast debut of her brand new club & festival-ready live performance for 2018 that explores the volatile space between femininity & masculinity and stage-based glamour and comfort (featuring bespoke visuals, lighting & stage design by Transforma).
Purnell, “loud and beautiful, sexy and sweaty,” performs one of his experimental movement theater works, which combine punk rock subversion, free jazz improvisation, and a radically open understanding of the forms, bodies, and idioms of dance along with his topically oriented writing that is at once brash and tender, confrontational and intimate.
In MAD, Casey Ellison, your faithful host, believes that the exploration of this often unspoken biological connection between mothers and daughters themselves will free us all.
About the performers
Fatima Al Qadiri is a Kuwaiti music producer and artist. She has released music as a solo artist on Hyperdub, Tri Angle, UNO NYC and Fade to Mind, and as a member of the group Future Brown on Warp. Al Qadiri is also a member of the Gulf-based collective GCC, whose work has been exhibited at MoMA PS1, Fridericianum, Berlin Bienniale and Sharjah Art Foundation. Her writing has appeared in Bidoun, Frieze and DIS.
Brontez Purnell, whose “explorations of blackness, queerness, maleness, and Southernness take sharp, confident turns between raunch and rhapsody,” has been publishing, performing, and curating in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than ten years as founder of cult zine Fag School, frontman for the band the Younger Lovers, and the founder and choreographer of the Brontez Purnell Dance Company. He has performed at venues such as New York Live Arts Festival, YBCA, SFMoMA, Counterpulse, His most recent book, Since I Laid My Burden Down, won a 2018 Whiting Award for fiction.
Casey Jane Ellison is a Lesbian Comedian and Lesbian Artist. She's written, directed and starred in talk shows about art, money, mothers and daughters and other systems of hypocrisy. Her series, Touching the Art was produced by Ovation TV and UR$ with Casey Jane Ellison was produced by Red Bull Studios. She's performed and shown work at MoMA PS1, Museum of Art and Design, MOCA, KW Institute, the Berlin Biennial, and the 2015 New Museum Triennial. She has been featured on PBS and NPR as well as in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, LA Times, the Guardian and more. She'll also perform in the upcoming 2018 Cleveland Triennial.
