Paintings of Italy and San Francisco
Beryl Landau & Anthony Holdsworth
San Francisco Paintings
Beryl Landau and Anthony Holdsworth are well known for their paintings of San Francisco.
Their works are in many public and private collections around the Bay Area.
Beryl Landau has lived and painted in Bernal Heights for many years. Her acrylics depict geographical locations but evoke inner feelings. She calls her style "symbolic landscape". Each landscape draws the viewer into a particular space and mood.
Holdsworth paints on location. He returns many times to a site transporting his equipment by bike and trailer. In recent years he has focused on the Mission District. He observes "Many of the qualities I appreciate in Italy are also present in the Mission District. This is not surprising since Latin culture originated in Italy."
Italy Paintings
Holdsworth began painting in Florence, Italy while he was Head of Outdoor Restoration for the Uffizi Gallery after the disastrous flood of 1966. Since the 1980's he has returned every two or three years, with Beryl Landau, to explore and paint there. On these visits, Beryl paints watercolors. Anthony works in oils. Back in her studio, Beryl uses photos for her acrylic paintings.
This two and a half month journey by bus and train from Sicily to Emilia-Romagna was their longest painting expedition. They spent most of their time in the south, a little understood region with a very different history from the north. They stayed in Catania, Cefalu, Matera, Ostuni and Aquila. In each city they made friends and learned local stories which are presented in a video that will be screened at the gallery on November 10th, 6:30 to 8 PM.
Their Italian experience has provided them with a different perspective on the Bay Area.
