Photographs help us make sense of the world around us. Through images, we examine and negotiate how we practice democracy in daily life, grapple with complex power structures, document the past, and envision the future.
Join CatchLight on Friday, November 1st for a reception celebrating the launch of our Democracy in Focus print sale. Hear from artist Alexandra Bell, organizer Aimee Allison, and collector Wayee Chu to discover how they consider aspects of democracy--like justice, freedom, legitimacy, and power--through photography.
The event is the kick-off for a 10-day online print sale, featuring photos by Wesaam Al-Badry, Andrea Bruce, Laura Morton, Tasneem Alsultan, Shahidul Alam, Carlos Javier Ortiz, Griselda San Martin, Ken Light, Alpana Aras-King, Tomas van Houtryve, Sarah Blesener, and others. Proceeds from the sale will be split evenly between contributing artists and CatchLight's programs to support visual storytelling.
The evening will include a brief program beginning at 7 pm, shared bites, and an open bar.

Speaker Bios
Aimee Allison is the Founder and president of She the People, a national network connecting women of color to transform our democracy. By bringing together the most promising women of color candidates, strategists, and movement leaders, Ms. Allison is one of the primary architects for the electoral successes in 2018 that made it the "year of women of color in politics." In September 2018, she convened the first summit focused on women of color in politics to show that social justice can become the law of the land. Author of Army of None, she has written for The New York Times, The Hill, and ESSENCE, among others.
Alexandra Bell is a multidisciplinary artist who investigates the ways media frames and constructs memory around race, politics, and culture. She deconstructs language and imagery to explore the tension between marginal experiences and dominant histories. Her work has been exhibited at MoMA PS1, We Buy Gold, Koenig & Clinton Gallery, The Nathan Cummings Foundation, Atlanta Contemporary, Pomona College Museum of Art, Spencer Museum of Art, and Usdan Gallery at Bennington College. She received the 2018 International Center of Photography Infinity Award in the applied category, is a 2018 Soros Equality Fellow, and a 2019 CatchLight Fellow. In 2019, she had a solo exhibition at the Charlie James Gallery and was featured in the Whitney Biennial.
Wayee Chu is a General Partner at Reach Capital, a venture fund focused on early stage education technology start-ups. Prior to Reach, Wayee was the co-founder of the NewSchools Seed Fund; a fund focused on early stage education technology companies with potential for a big impact in K-12 education. Wayee worked as an equity research analyst at Merrill Lynch in New York, where she covered the financial services sector. She started her career in 1997 as a financial analyst at Morgan Stanley. Wayee also spends her time as an angel investor supporting many consumer and education technology startups. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Wayee also supports several Bay Area education non-profits including New Leaders, Bay Area and Beyond12. Wayee graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in Economics and Political Science.
