Dancing Feet

SEE EVENT DETAILS
The Dancing Sun Dance Company (sponsored by the non-profit Dancing Sun
Foundation) has been producing annual dance performances for 10+ years and has performed in the San Jose Downtown Arts Series and San Jose Performing Arts Series. Dancing Sun Foundation's (DSF’s) programs contemporary modern dance works are rooted deeply in Asian/Chinese culture. We are unique here in Bay area in that the dance approach, characteristic of the artistic director Bih-Tau Sung, pushes boundaries of traditional dance styles as well as content - exploring issues and emotions not typically expressed as a matter of culture.

With “Dancing Feet” at History Park San Jose’s “Ng Shing Gung” Temple, DSF is exploring an environment, using a specific space for dance creation and performance other than on a regular theater stage. “Ng Shing Gung” means “Temple of Five Gods” and was named for the five divinities whose statues were housed within: Kwan Yin, Goddess of Mercy; Choi Sun, God of Wealth; Cheng Huan, the Canton City God;
Kwan Gung, God of War and Justice; and Tien Ho, Queen of Heaven. Whereas a stage performance is about expressing a theme of our choosing, this production is about how the environment that we perform in inspires choices and reflection.

Dancing Sun Foundation (DSF) is known for high-quality modern dance, with performances that are well-rehearsed and technically challenging. What makes “Dancing Feet” special from performances in the past is the focus on improvised movements based on the venue and the use of Contact Improvisation.

The practice of Contact Improvisation depends on touch and the initiation of weight exchange with another person. DSF will create a movement “dialogue,” utilizing the boundaries of movement and the medium of dance. Dancers will explore the relationship with each other using elements such as friction, momentum, gravity, and suspension.

The performance this June brings together both local Bay Area dancers/choreographers and Taiwanese artists.
