Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Daddy Yankee, née Raymond Ayala, is credited with introducing reggaeton to US audiences with the international success of his 2004 album Barrio Fino. Originally popularized in Puerto Rico in the '90s, reggaeton combines elements of Jamaican dancehall, salsa, and rap, the resulting combination being encapsulated perfectly on Ayala's Latin Grammy-nominated 2004 hit "Gasolina." In 2013, Ayala released his 7th studio album King Daddy as a digital only-album, reaching the No. 1 position on iTunes on the release's first day. Preceding King Daddy was 2011's phenomenally successful Prestige, which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Latin Albums chart and earned him another Latin Grammy nomination for single "Lovumba." Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Ayala aspired to a career in professional baseball, trying out for the Seattle Mariners before a stray bullet wound forced a lengthy recovery period that allowed him to refocus on music.
