Angela Kraft Cross, organ
PROGRAM
Symphony No. 2 by Vierne
Vierne composed his Second Symphony two years into his prestigious post as organist of Notre Dame in Paris. That cathedral's rich and powerful Cavaillé-Coll organ had already become an extension of him.
About the preview performance of the second and third movements, Claude Debussy's wrote:
"M. Vierne's symphony is truly remarkable. It combines rich musicality with ingenious discoveries in the special sonority of the organ. J.S. Bach, the father of us all, would have been well pleased with M. Vierne."
