Concert - A La Mar (To The Sea)

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Arguello (see times)
Experience the powerful musical traditions that stretch back to the founding of El Presidio de San Francisco in 1776. Mexican roots group Los Cenzontles (The Mockingbirds) joins forces with early music violinist Shira Kammen for a hauntingly evocative concert that resurrects the early marriage of European music and the mixed roots of traditional Mexican music. This live performance of work from their new CD unites Medieval and early Renaissance European music with indigenous and African musical traditions. All of these ingredients form the rhythms and instrumentation of the Mexican roots music we know today, and A La Mar exquisitely celebrates this blending of cultures.
California-based Mexican roots band Los Cenzontles is accustomed to illuminating deep, often unexpected musical connections that lie between their own refined understanding of Mexican musical traditions and the music of more distant cultures, separated in time or place from those traditions. Several past Los Cenzontles projects have underscored and celebrated common roots with Irish, African-American, Creole, Cuban, and other cultures with artists such as Taj Mahal, The Chieftains, Andre Thierry and many others.
Shira Kammen is among the elite musicians who bring to life the ancient traditions of Europe as living art forms, and has spent well over half of her life exploring the worlds of early and traditional music. She received her degree in music from UC Berkeley and studied medieval music and vielle with Margriet Tindemans. Shira frequently collaborates with musicians from a variety of traditions. In 1994 Shira worked with Eugene Rodriguez (Executive and Artistic Director of Los Cenzontles) and Mexican folk group Mono Blanco to produce the highly acclaimed and influential El Mundo Se Va A Acabaralbum, a collaboration that also included a broad variety of traditional musicians. Her approach toward music making, her comprehensive training in early music, which is a main root of traditional Western music, and her musical skill made her an ideal collaborator for this unique project.
Los Cenzontles (pronounced los senn-sont-less) has made a name for themselves among music aficionados across the US and in Europe creating roots music, cross-cultural projects, collaborating on record and live with Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Ry Cooder, Los Lobos, Taj Mahal, Preservation Hall Jazz Band and The Chieftains, among others. Their media productions have been broadcast nationally on PBS. Their YouTube Channel hosts hundreds of videos enjoyed throughout the world. The group is based at their East Bay Cultural Arts Academy in San Pablo where they create media and teach Mexican traditions to community children.
