This Thanksgiving, share the love of contemporary dance with friends and family at the 21st round of the CONCEPT series. RAWdance’s beloved salon serves up a fresh dose of unique, high quality dance art in a lavish setting, but with a living room vibe. Five Bay Area choreographers join RAWdance to share works-in-progress and revamped repertory tailored for intimate viewing.
The entire CONCEPT series: 21 artist roster is new to the salon. Among them are some familiar faces in the Bay Area contemporary dance scene, such as Kristin Damrow & Company, who presents a excerpt of EAMES, her latest research inspired by the life and iconic designs of Charles and Ray Eames. Sarah Cecilia’s offers a glimpse at how her classical technique and risk-taking approach to contemporary ballet coalesce into surprising innovations in movement. Bianca Cabrera/Blind Tiger Society, brings traditional values into question with her ferocity, spectacle, and strong, queer, Latina vision. There are some fresh faces as well, including Courtney Mazeika of The Foundry and the new up-and-coming modern dance company, Rogelio Lopez & Dancers, who are eager to share their choreographic voices with a laid-back audience. Finally, RAWdance tests out their latest creative musings for the new year.
For the CONCEPT series, choreographers are encouraged to share work at any point of creation, offering new perspectives into the artistic process. RAWdance Co-Artistic Directors, Ryan T. Smith and Wendy Rein are active hosts, serving treats and a healthy dose of banter in between the works. The series takes place in the lavish Green Room in the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center, creating a rare opportunity to see dance in one of the most beautiful spaces in the city. This round of the salon provides a fun, local, cultural antidote to the consumer mayhem of Black Friday, a veritable Thanksgiving digestif. And as always, the series is pay-what-you-can.
