British choreographer Wayne McGregor's exhilarating company returns to San Francisco Performances at YBCA Theater, with a new work being developed in McGregor's signature process that fuses dance, art, philosophy, science, technology and current events for a deeper look at how movement embodies much more than movement. The piece is called "Autobiography" and is inspired in part by McGregor's own DNA.
"Autobiography" received its recent world premiere at Sadler's Wells in London, October 7, 2017. The San Francisco engagement will be its West Coast premiere. McGregor, who works with dance companies from around the world, including the Royal Ballet, the Bolshoi and the New York City Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and Paris Opera ballet companies has his pick of some of the best dancers in the world to stage new works on, but for a subject so personal to McGregor, "Autobiography" has been brought to life by his own troupe.
The work features an original score composed by Jlin (a former steel worker from Gary, Indiana) and described as "mesmerizingly good," with a mix of industrial sounds, dance rhythms and birdsongs, and even a passage of baroque string music. "Autobiography," which includes sculptural lighting and projection, is made up of 23 choreographic events, performed in a never-to-be-repeated sequence, randomly generated by and algorithm based on McGregor's genetic code. The randomness is a trademark and a nod to choreographer Merce Cunningham, one of McGregor's major dance influences.
