Classical Painting Workshop

SEE EVENT DETAILS
A Two Day Intensive Workshop and Intro to Classical Painting!

This workshop will explore the first stages of oil painting by learning to paint using a limited palette. This Class is designed to guide students through an application of the traditional approach to painting form, light and color in an exercise with a pear.

Artist Matthew Riggs leads the student through an introduction to painting in a classical tradition, understanding oil paint handling, mixing color values and value coordination. He will demonstrate the composition of color, objects, and set up. We will learn about how to approach our palette and the procedure of covering the canvas. Initially, students will learn grisaille, a technique that helps students to learn a gray scale, often used in under-painting. In the next exercise, student will use a limited palette to render a pear. This will be helpful for those looking to learn about keying color values and paint application. We will discuss blocking out with a wash and building successive layers of paint, manipulating paint to achieve softs and sharps in our edge design.

Painting the pair will help students learn to express form and light as well as come into contact with decisions the classical painters made concerning design and composition.

If you are interested in classical painting methods and traditional painting, this workshop is for you.

Saturday, Sunday, April 26th & 27th
10:00am - 4:00pm
