Claiming Space: Refiguring the Body in Landscape

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Summer exhibition re-examines how the human form, presented in public space, fosters a sense of inclusion and belonging, featuring Pilar Agüero-Esparza, Cassils, Oliver Lee Jackson, Margaret Laurena Kemp, Riva Lehrer, Alison Saar, Hank Willis Thomas, and Wanxin Zhang.

In its ongoing commitment to building bridges through art and performance, Montalvo Arts Center is pleased to present Claiming Space: Refiguring the Body in Landscape, a group exhibition held throughout Montalvo's 175 acre public grounds. Claiming Space brings together celebrated artists who have created forms and images representing diverse bodies, from bodies of color to non-binary bodies, in an effort to challenge the classical and traditional figures that dominate civic and public spaces. The exhibition includes works on loan as well as new commissions with hopes of offering a more inclusive experience to art viewers. Participating artists include: Pilar Agüero-Esparza, Cassils, Oliver Lee Jackson, Margaret Laurena Kemp, Riva Lehrer, Alison Saar, Hank Willis Thomas, and Wanxin Zhang. The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of related programs and will open with a celebratory performance festival on July 15, 2022. Claiming Space is free and open to the public and runs from July 15 through October 15, 2022.

"Our bodies are important political spaces." states Donna Conwell, Curator of the Lucas Artists Program at Montalvo. "Bodies are sites of vulnerability and exchange, formed in relation to forces of power and social expectations. In public, bodies of color, disabled bodies, female identifying, trans and non-binary bodies are policed and surveyed; while at the same time they are not typically represented in our shared civic spaces. The assembled works invite the viewer to consider what it means for our bodies to feel grounded and safe in public, to feel seen and to belong."
