The artist’s unique perspective has often found a warm welcome in cities. As hotbeds of imagination and creative thinking, urban centers have long fostered artists and artists have long contributed to their visionary and innovative spirit. This symbiotic relationship has been visioned expertly and often by so many Creativity Explored makers. Cityscape, curated by CE artist Isaac Haney-Owens, is an exploration of this timeless call and response and features works by eleven Creativity Explored artists.
Haney-Owens says, “The urban environment is fascinating to me because of the variety of architectural styles, the different types of people it attracts, and the amount of cultural diversity there is in a city.” Prompted by the radical creativity found in the city he calls home, Haney-Owens plans to re-work the Gallery into a simulated urban environment (including transforming our gallery desk into a classic outdoor newsstand). The space will house an array of urban-themed paintings, drawings, and sculptures which mirror the magnetic and eclectic energy of the real-life city just beyond.
Within Cityscape, San Francisco plays a starring role, while general urban aesthetics are explored as well. Exquisite architectural drawings by Lance Rivers promote a sense of memory and track changes to the urban landscape. The pure beauty of movement and the patterned flows of people, cars and traffic through the city are impressionistically represented in the drawings of Andrew Li and Kate Thompson, and a playful architectural sculpture by Lucinda Addison personifies an intimate relationship to San Francisco’s colorful vibrancy.
Artists have been captivated by the lure of the urban for centuries—the nonrural environment as muse having been explored in artistic histories from fresco painting to contemporary cinema. The artists included in Cityscape, aim to build upon this rich legacy through their own unique and personal artistic visioning.
A new issue of the long-running zine project Whipper Snapper Nerd (WSN) will be released into the urban wilds at the Cityscape opening reception. WSN 11 features the art of Isaac Haney-Owens. Haney-Owens regularly constructs sculptural re-creations of signs from historic small businesses. His detail-oriented and handbuilt models act as memento minisculo, recording urban changes and building social memory.
