Local artist Bea Garth employs surrealism in her work, but all her paintings are more familiar-feeling than outright abstract-each one tells a little self-contained story. Her style is dreamy in the sense that all the people, animals and backgrounds are exaggerated, like some of Picasso's slightly more realistic paintings, and her choice of colors and shapes has a Latin influence. Each painting carries a feeling that is hopeful and optimistic. Garth says her work has offered a way to heal from trauma and toxic relationships from her past. This Thursday she'll host a reception. People can meet her, listen to live jazz and enjoy refreshments. She'll have a Q&A near the end of the reception. (Aaron Carnes)
