The 2011 film How To Grow a Band is a fascinating documentary which follows mandolin player Chris Thile's transition from a child bluegrass star (Nickel Creek) to the leader of progressive string quintet/classical music ensemble, Punch Brothers. Upright bassist Edgar Meyer also has built a career straddling the worlds of bluegrass and classical music. Thile and Meyer have worked together on various projects through the years. They released their second full-length together this year appropriately titled Bass & Mandolin, a feat of remarkable, dizzying musicianship. The two players bounce melodies off each other with an energetic, vibrant, improvisational, jazzy spirit, further pushing the boundaries of string groups. (Aaron Carnes)
