Chitresh Das Institute announces an evening of new work of kathak dance by Artistic Director Charlotte Moraga, featuring the World Premiere of 13 Matra, an exciting and dynamic dance based on the tarana, a form of high paced classical Indian vocal music, and Moraga's 2022 work, Invoking the River, a deeply moving collaboration of dance, music, poetry and story-telling that weaves each dancers' personal connections to chosen waterways in India with the effects of climate change.
Moraga's 13 Matra is choreographed in a 13-beat cycle. The number 13 represents female power. 13 Matra is an exuberant work of energy, precision and beauty, with dancers turning as many as three times per second. 13 Matra is set to a tarana, a type of composition in Hindustani classical vocal music. The tarana was invented in the 12th century by Indian Sufi singer, musician, poet and scholar Amir Khusrau. This particular tarana was composed by Ben Kunin.
Also on the program is Moraga's 2022 Invoking the River, part of CDI's Art for the Planet program, bringing attention to climate change through art and performance. Collaborating with filmmaker, poet and media artist Alka Raghuram and Indian pianist/composer Utsav Lal, noted for his innovative handling of Indian classical music on a Western instrument. Moraga's choreography reflects the movement of water and situates each dancer as a musician with 5 pounds of bells wrapped around the ankles. Moraga worked with each dancer to develop their own story through abhinaya (expression or acting). The result is a deeply personal multimedia storytelling of the dancers' connections to different rivers in India.
The dancers of the Chitresh Das Dance are Gauri Bhatnagar, Vanita Mundhra, Shruti Pai, Mayuka Sarukkai, Kritika Sharma, with dancers from the Chitresh Das Institute Heeya Das, Maahi Desai, Pakhi Gupta, Ruhi Kalambur, Reya Lakhani, Ayana Modi, Sanjana Rao, Avani Viswanathan, Aanya Gupta, Meera Minocha, Myra Mishra, and Neema Sakariya.
