The John Lee Hooker Foundation hosts “Centennial of The Blues,” a celebration at Chapel of the Chimes Oakland to honor what would have been the 100th birthday of the legendary blues artist.
From 1-3 p.m., community members and fans are invited to pay respects, bid on silent auction items and enjoy the blues. John Lee Hooker’s family will also be on hand to share some of their favorite stories.
From 3 to 6 p.m., a ticketed event will include live music and formal remarks from family members and Oakland Mayor, Mrs. Libby Schaaf. All funds raised through ticket sales and the silent auction will be donated to the John Lee Hooker Foundation.
Tickets are $50 in advance and $55 at the door. The first 25 guests who purchase tickets will receive a special gift bag. Space is limited, so advanced purchase is encouraged: http://bit.ly/2uGtAj7.
“Centennial of The Blues” serves as the introduction of the Foundation’s blues education program in schools. As the first school selected, students at Oakland’s Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary will learn the rich history of the blues, how to play instruments and write songs – and how everything ties back to much of today’s music, which has roots in the blues. The program, in partnership with The Blues Society, invites local musicians to talk with students and give performances that bring the blues to life. The Foundation also partners with Epiphone to supply instruments for student use.
