Enkutatash is the first day of the Ethiopian New Year (September 11) and means “gifts of jewels” in the Amharic language. It not only celebrates the start of a new year, but the end of a long rainy season to the start of another where the country is blooming in yellow daisies. Modern Enkutatash is a holiday of exchanging New Years greetings and gifts, families and friends gathering for a traditional meal of injera (flat bread) and wat (stew).
