Catherine Maize: Recent Paintings

September 13 - November 8, 2025
Opening reception: Saturday, September 13th, 3-5 pm
Remarks: 3:30 pm

Paul Thiebaud Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Catherine Maize: Recent Paintings on Saturday, September 13, 2025, with a reception from 3-5 pm and remarks at 3:30 pm. The exhibition features a selection of twenty recent oil paintings on Masonite panels depicting contemplative still-lifes, glimpses of landscapes, and a rare self-portrait, with each work being an exploration of subtlety and precision in painting. The exhibition will be on view through November 8, 2025.

At first glance, Catherine Maize's paintings are quiet and reserved, yet they beckon the viewer to engage in a little world where settings and objects are carefully composed, offering a lasting impression. In this newest body of work, Maize is keenly focused on the formal concerns of shape, volume, and compositional relationships. As viewed in Tabletop Vases with Lemon, Maize pairs multiple objects of various sizes, textured surfaces, and contrasting values resulting in a composition that appears effortlessly restrained and imbued with elegance, a practice also observed in the work of Italian modernist, Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964).

The atmosphere in each painting is as precisely calculated as her delicate handling of light and shadow, creating a tension between visibility and obscurity. This can be found in the varying perspectives found in Bowls on Table, Chair and Desk, and Blue Amphora and Vase. A gem in the exhibition is Self-Portrait, a piece that stands apart from the others in subject matter. It resonates with thoughtful reflection using subtlety and nuance to capture her own essence without the usual dramatics of portraiture. This newest series of paintings is not about grand gestures but rather the grace and contemplative depth that has become a hallmark of Maize's artistic practice.

Catherine Maize received her BFA and MFA at Indiana University and has studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, Yale School of Art, and The New York Studio School. Her works have been exhibited across the United States and can be found in numerous private collections. This is Catherine Maize's sixth exhibition with Paul Thiebaud Gallery.
