Orchids of Delphi presents the meticulous work of Seattle-based artist Casey Curran. Casey's intricate kinetic sculptures and installations transport viewers into detailed dreams inspired by Greek mythology and underwater fantasies. Viewers will interact with the sculptures and see different worlds appear with each turn of the mécanique. The detailed cuts and fastidious installation make for an unforgettable experience, one which aims to leave its viewers both perplexed and intrigued.
The site-specific installation is centered around the beautiful decay of the goddess, Pythia, also known as the Oracle of Delphi. All the works in the exhibition express prophetic visions with signs and signifiers of the Greek high priestess. Pythia, one of the most powerful women of the classical world, was ultimately brutally murdered by Apollo and her body was left to rot. Pythia delivered oracles induced by vapors rising from a chasm in the rock. Orchids of Delphi will explore motifs of loss, decay, and rebirth.
Casey Curran's artwork is a mix of past and present, combining modern laser-cut precision with medieval kinetic techniques. Orchids of Delphi will feature a garden of sculptures and installations that bloom right before your eyes. Casey employs scaffold-like structures to build out his installations and creates layering effects evocative of underwater caves.
Casey Curran was previously featured in an exhibition at Heron Arts, In Balance. Casey received his BFA in painting and sculpture from Cornish College of the Arts in 2006. He has completed several large-scale public works in partnership with Skanska Architects, MadArt, Facebook, Oculus Rift, and Security Properties. In 2010 and 2013, Curran was awarded the NY Sculpture Space residency twice and has received multiple awards in artistic merit since. In 2008, Curran become a key collaborator in the internationally recognized performance art group Saint Genet developing large-scale interactive sets, which have been exhibited at The Guggenheim Museum in NY, The Kunsthalle Museum in Krems, Austria, Luminato Festival in Toronto, Canada, and Frye Art Museum in Seattle, WA. Curran is currently developing a series of works that explore our psychological relationship with nature.
