Carmina Burana at Davies Symphony Hall

SEE EVENT DETAILS
The San Francisco Choral Society continues its 30th anniversary season with a semi-staged version of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" and the world premiere of "teach your children" by David Lang, a new choral work commissioned by the organization in celebration of its milestone year.

Though more commonly heard in the concert hall as a choral and orchestral work, "Carmina Burana" was originally intended for the stage, serving Carl Orff's belief that "music is the servant of the word, trying not to disturb, but to emphasize and underline." For these performances, the San Francisco Choral Society welcomes the creative mind of designer Michael Mohammed for a semi-staged version that also includes an array of dancers. Bay Area favorites, Marnie Breckenridge (soprano), J. Raymond Meyers (tenor) and Eugene Brancoveanu (bass baritone), feature as soloists for this work and join forces with 188+ singers from the SF Choral Society and Piedmont East Bay Children's Choir, and an expanded California Chamber Symphony of 55+ musicians.

Continuing its legacy of commissioning new choral works, the San Francisco Choral Society will present the world premiere of "teach your children" by Pulitzer Prize winner, David Lang. This commission is the organization's sixth in 12 years and marks a significant collaboration with a composer that has been hailed as "an American master" (New Yorker). In direct response to today's political climate and the reaction of younger generations, the three-movement work explores the importance of the lessons that are taught by and learned from parents, teachers, peers and the environment. Soprano Marnie Breckenridge makes her second appearance of the evening performing as soloist alongside the San Francisco Choral Society and Piedmont East Bay Children's Choir.

$30 to $36.
