The Italian Cultural Institute is happy to host Carlos Navarro in a guitar recital organized in collaboration with the Consulate General of Peru.
Juan Carlos Arancibia Navarro is one of the most active guitarists of his generation. Even while he was still a student of Oscar Zamora at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Lima he won the second prize in the Vivace Guitar Competition in the Peruvian capital and appeared as a soloist with the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional in his native Peru. By 2005 the young guitarist was already teaching at one of his country’s most prestigious universities, the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas. That year he also won the first prize in the National Guitar Competition in Arequipa.
In 2006 Carlos Navarro moved to Germany in order to study with Dale Kavanagh and Thomas Kirchhoff of the Amadeus Guitar Duo at the Detmold Academy of Music. He completed his first degree there in 2009 and three years later passed his concert examination with distinction. That same year WDR Westdeutscher Rundfunk broadcast a portrait of him. In 2015 he completed a master’s degree in chamber music with Joaquín Clerch at the Robert Schumann Academy in Düsseldorf, gaining the highest mark.
In Germany, too, Carlos Navarro has been the recipient of numerous awards and distinctions. In 2008, for example, he received the GWK Young Artist Award from the Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Westfälischen Kulturarbeit in Münster/Westphalia and was awarded a scholarship by the Alumni Association of the Detmold Academy of Music. In 2010 he received a special award (“Junge Kunst International”) from the Paderborn-Höxter-Detmold Volksbank. In 2013 he and the flautist Anita Farkas won third prize in the Gerhard Vogt Guitar Plus One Competition, which they entered as Arie Duo. Also in 2013 he won the second prize at the Léopold Bellan Chamber Music Competition in Paris. In 2014 he and the flautist Ania Karpowicz were awarded the second prize in the Competition for Chamber Music with Guitar in Olsztyn in Poland.

He has taught in Germany for many years and gives masterclasses in Peru and Germany, most notably at the International Guitar Symposium in Iserlohn, which hosts one of the largest guitar festivals in the world. Since 2014 he has taught at the Technical University in Dortmund, where he also directs the guitar ensemble. Since 2017 is the artistic director of the Dortmund Gutiar Festival.
Carlos Navarro made his CD debut with “Mosaïque” as a member of the Gran Guitarra Quartet. Released by Classic Clips (CLCL 112), it was widely praised by the specialist press. Arie Duo’s CD “Café” (Classic Clips CLCL 119) was described as “essential listening” by the magazine of the Federation of German Plucked Instrument Players (Bund Deutscher Zupfmusiker).
