Carey Lin
& what have you
August 28 - October 9, 2013
Opening reception: Wednesday, August 28, 8 - 10 p.m.
Tartine Bakery & Cafe, 600 Guerrero Street, San Francisco
Tartine is pleased to present & what have you, a painting project by San Francisco artist Carey Lin that investigates the detritus and interstitial elements of the bakery itself. Working remotely from snapshots contributed by Tartine staff, Lin has created a suite of paintings that track imagery from specific parts of the bakery and cafe over the course of 12 weeks. The resulting paintings are time lapse portraits of both behind-the-scenes work areas and public spaces, capturing minutiae like kitchen supplies in storage containers, custom order forms awaiting fulfillment, wastebasket debris left by Tartine patrons, and computer spreadsheets of weekly baking schedules. Together the works consider the everyday ebb and flow of Tartine and draw forth some aspects of the popular bakery that are easily overlooked amidst the sights, sounds, and smells regularly encountered inside.
