The 12th Annual Bay Area Flamenco Festival/Festival Flamenco Gitano is honored to present Juana la del Pipa and Enrique el Extremeño in concert with guitarists Pepe del Morao and Pino de Losada.
Juana la del Pipa is a powerhouse Gypsy singer from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. Her distinctive voice is said to channel the ancestors. She hails from a clan of outstanding flamenco artists for whom music and dance are a vessel that transmits their history and their culture of resistance. Besides performing in theaters all over the world, she is featured on recordings such as "Los Juncales de Jerez" (1998) and "Mujerez" (2009). She will be accompanied by guitarist Pepe del Morao
Enrique el Extremeño is one of Flamenco's most iconic singers. He first came to the Bay Area in the 1980s with the legendary production, Flamenco Puro along with Farruco, Manuela Carrasco, La Fernanda, Chocolate and other luminaries. He is one of the most respected singers for dance, in demand by such greats as Mario Maya, El Griio, Cristina Hoyos, Antonio el Pipa,Eva la Yerbabuena and Manuela Carrasco. He has received many awards, including the Bienal de Sevilla's prestigious Giraldillo. He has issued seven CDs, the most recent being “Chorrito Bajo” (2015). He will be accompanied by guitarist Pino Losada.
Guitarist Pepe del Morao, also from Jerez, is from one of the most important flamenco guitar dynasties in history. He is the grandson of patriarch Manuel Morao, the nephew of Moraíto and is Diego del Morao’s cousin. Along with his collaborations with other young artists from his home town such as Rafael del Zambo and Manuel de la Nina, he works with many of the iconic artists of Jerez, including Antonio El Pipa, Luis el Zambo, Tomasa La Macanita, Jesus Méndez and Fernando de la Morena.
Guitarist Pino Losada comes from a family of Flamenco artists —mostly guitarists— with great international prestige. He began working at age 15 under the direction of his uncle Tito Losada and went on to share the stage with artists of the stature of “El Indio Gitano,” Joaquín Cortés and Sara Baras. He has recorded with singers such as Ramón "El Portugués" and "El Guadiana”.
