Four Barrel Coffee is pleased to present 'California Paperscapes' by Almost Surely Studio. Founded by designer and producer Tetsuya Takenomata and artist Andrea Bergen, Almost Surely Studio produces carefully crafted works of art in a variety of media. Their distinctive approach to art making brings together Takenomata’s conceptual vision with Bergen’s intuitive artistry. With their focus on animal-centric and intricate hand cut paper collages, Bergen and Takenomata celebrate the beauty of nature and relate concern and anxiety regarding the future of wildlife and the environment. They embrace an analog, hand crafted process, and each image is created using Bergen's singular collaging technique which uses only scissors and colored pastel paper. Thousands of pieces of the hand cut paper are layered together on wood board until the surface of the collage is dense and sculptural.
'California Paperscapes' is a series of four continuous triptychs that represent a hope that nature will someday return to its unaltered, idealized state. The panels progress through Joshua Tree, Point Reyes, and the Sequoia forest. As human influence fades from right towards the left, the environment regains its vibrancy and equilibrium. The scene illustrates an optimistic fantasy of change through supernatural intervention in which nature is fully restored after the extinction of humans. See the debut of this massive, thirty six foot wide composition in its entirety at Four Barrel Coffee this February and March.
Join us on Friday, February 2nd from 6-8pm for the opening reception for this exhibition. Drinks will be served and the artists will be in attendance.
