SEE EVENT DETAILS
Exhibition Dates: August 18 - September 15th, 2022
Opening Exhibition: August 18th, 5-9 pm
Gallery Hours: By Appointment Only

Heron Arts is pleased to announce the solo exhibition "Bouquet Paintings and Other Works" from New York based artist duo Adam Frezza and Terri Chiao, collectively known as CHIAOZZA. "Bouquet Paintings and Other Works" emerge from years of exploring and abstracting the forms of plants, flowers, and vessels in CHIAOZZA'S sculptural work. The opening reception for "Bouquet Paintings and Other Works" is August 18th, 2022 from 5-9 pm. It is free and open to the public. The exhibition will be on view to the public until September 15th, 2022 by appointment only.

In the Bouquet Paintings series, CHIAOZZA plays with the graphic space of the picture plane, in which bulbous floral forms push at the edges of the rectangular frame, and negative and positive space are equally weighted in the construction of the composition. The formal decisions within this body of work are in service of a grounded stability and balance in search for a feeling of confidence, peace, and fullness. The language of wiggly plant forms in vessels pushing at the edges of the frame speaks about the entwined relationships between "wild" nature (like plants, geology, and weather) and "constructed" nature (like architecture, utilitarian objects, and music).

Play is a word that the artist duo use to describe their collaborative process. They define play as an exercise in physical and mental elasticity that informs each step of their process. They use it as a tool to adjust their perception of the commonplace, and thus bring out the magic in the everyday.

Using play as an exercise in alternative thinking, the Bouquet Paintings series began from observing and sometimes collecting and arranging wildflowers and plants on walks together. The finished artwork is the result of shifting their gaze to the unexpected shapes, colors, and processes found in those observations.

"We try to listen to each piece to uncover relationships in form and color that are unique to that work. The process feels like a constant search for balance - compositionally, coloristically, formally, and spiritually. The negative and positive space are equally considered. The best pieces are often the ones that feel calm and natural as well as unexpected and surreal. Like the Japanese suiseki, we approach each image as a potential spiritual icon, imbuing each work with a humble loftiness to hold the wildness around us still for a moment and give us a chance to breathe." - CHIAOZZA

The entire exhibition will channel that sense of balance and completeness by creating a space that feels like a peaceful interior garden; an oasis of the mind and soul.
