Part of our bi-monthly Book Talk series, Book Talk :: Chronicle Books :: The First 50 Years on August 18, 2017 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at which members of the editorial, design and production departments -- the troika of the “make” side - of Chronicle Books will speak about Chronicle Books, the evolutionary history of the company spanning the 50 years since it's launch in 1967 during the the Summer of Love, with thoughtful anecdotes and curious remembrances of events that paved the way for this most unique publishing company.
About the Exhibition
Chronicle Books joins with San Francisco Center for the Book to present a new exhibit, Chronicle Books: Born in the Summer of Love. The exhibit is part of Chronicle Books’ year-long celebration of its 50th anniversary and runs from June 23 thru September 24, 2017 at San Francisco Center for the Book.
Founded in 1967, Chronicle Books is one of the world’s most respected publishers of illustrated books and gifts, known for publishing exceptional titles that are instantly recognizable for their spirit and creativity. A leader in publishing innovation, Chronicle Books was the first to publish paperback cookbooks with vibrant, full-bleed food photography throughout; the first to offer art books in paperback so the price could be kept low and accessible to a wider number of people; and, with its breakout book Griffin & Sabine (1991), it was the first to expand the boundaries of what a book could be. Throughout its history, Chronicle Books’ titles have been widely acclaimed for their cutting-edge design, superb production, and ability to surprise and delight readers of all ages.
The oldest book in the exhibit is Here Today (1969), a comprehensive architectural history of San Francisco, published in collaboration with the city’s Junior League, and the most recent is The Card Catalog (2017), a visual celebration of the Library of Congress’s magnificent collection and the cataloging system that has kept it organized for centuries.
Also on display is The Beatles Anthology (2000), which features 1300 photographs and over 300,000 words covering more than 400 pages. Chronicle Books launched The Beatles Anthology in the U.S. with a massive flash-mob Beatles sing-along in Union Square and orchestrated the simultaneous launch of nine international editions. The Beatles Anthology was Chronicle’s first book to debut at #1 on the New York Times Bestseller List.
Visitors can also view Star Wars: From Concept to Screen to Collectible (1992), the first title in Chronicle Books’ long collaboration with Lucasfilm Ltd., and Tartine (2006) one of the major titles in Chronicle’s highly regarded cookbook publishing line.
Children’s books in the exhibit include Mama, Do You Love Me? (1991); Little Pea (2005) by bestselling author Amy Krouse Rosenthal; Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site (2011), which has been on the New York Times Bestseller List for more than 200 weeks; Josephine (2013), a Coretta Scott King and Horn Book Honor Book; and They All Saw a Cat (2016), a Caldecott Honor Book.
In keeping with Chronicle’s mission to make high quality art and design accessible to as many people as possible, books will be displayed on open shelves, and viewers of the exhibit will be encouraged to pick up and leaf through the volumes.
