THIS EVENT HAS ENDED
PLEASE JOIN TAIWAN CAFE MEETUP  GROUP FOR A NIGHT OF JAZZ AND INTRIGUING BOOK DISCUSSION!

As the fall weather sets in, what could be cozier than a fireside chat with Joyce Bergvelt about her new book, Lord of Formosa (Formosa, voorgoed verloren). This captivating novel, inspired by historical events, dramatizes the confrontations between the Dutch colony of Taiwan and 17th century Chinese warlord, Zhen Chenggong (Koxinga). After our chat with the author, we will settle back and enjoy the seductive sounds of Autonomous Region to get you ready for the weekend!

Taiwan was first colonized by Dutch East India Company before the island was taken over by China and then by Japan. Taiwan also became the first colony that the Dutch lost. The battles over Taiwan marked the beginning of major military clashes between the West and China. Like Koxinga, who was born to a Japanese mother and a Chinese father, Bergvelt has lived in Japan, China and Taiwan. She studied in Taiwan for a year while her father headed up Philips Taiwan and made early investment in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC). She will join us by teleconference from Rotterdam to tell us more about her book.

Autonomous Region, led by vocalist Caroline Cabading, was founded in 2015, and performs regularly at the International Hotel, Manilatown Center, in San Francisco. Don’t miss their great performance and the opportunity to meet and learn about other cultures!
