Blue Ocean

"I think My Bloody Valentine wrote this one already," you're sure to catch yourself thinking during the clangorous opening moments of "Summer of Hands," ready to mark Blue Ocean down as another uninspired shoegaze band. But let it play on, and you'll be treated to the peppy little pop song -- more indebted to 80s UK DIY than shoegaze -- that the Bay Area duo has waiting for you beyond. Soon, the dentist's drill-like whirs of Dave Stringi's guitar, which sound like they should be followed by a pinch on the gum or a shock to a nerve, fade into the background of your awareness and reveal the head-bobbing melody hiding there. "I turn my head as it's slipping away I still like it in the summer of hands," you hear Stringi sing in a wide-eyed, Dan Treacy-ish voice, over a thumping rhythm and suddenly you've forgotten what you were worried about in the first place. It wouldn't be a Blue Ocean tune if things didn't get at least a little bit chaotic, though. And so, when a sprinkling of dreamy electronic tones drifts by, as they often do in these songs, they're followed by some queasy, siren-like synth that sends the track reeling. Drummer Rick Alteri works quickly to try and hammer things back into place, but the electronics and feedback eventually win out, screeching and squealing unimpeded by the track's end." - Dusted

Coral Grief is the Seattle-based dream pop project of Lena Farr-Morrissey and Sam Fason. Coral Grief's music generates reverie with intense focus, built upon krautrock and synth pop undertones. While the songs are not confined to quarantine, they are a product of its themes. Ambient guitars and weavings synths create the space for Farr-Morrissey's melodies and Fason's guitar work to flourish, with expert bass lines propelling each song forward.
