Dee Dee’s acclaimed recordings showcase her unique spin on the Great American Songbook. Examples include Love And Peace, her tribute to the great jazz pianist and composer Horace Silver; Red Earth, an exploration of her own African roots in Mali; This Is New, a collection of Kurt Weill theatre songs; and J’Ai Deux Amours, an album of French songs in dedication to the country where she lived for several years. Her latest album, Dee Dee’s Feathers, pays homage to the city of New Orleans and its music.
The singer gained her first professional experience as a member of the legendary Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band, and throughout the ‘70s she performed with such jazz luminaries as Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon and Dizzy Gillespie. In addition to her appearance in The Wiz, she starred in the lead role of Billie Holiday in the off-Broadway production of Lady Day. Her other theatrical credits include Sophisticated Ladies, Carmen and Cabaret.
