Vocalist Dee Bridgewater is a GRAMMY and Tony Award-winning jazz giant who was recently named a 2017 NEA Jazz Master, the nation’s highest honor for a jazz musician. Bridgewater is a dynamic performer who commands the stage with rhythmic excitement, engaging the audience with song and a terrific sense of humor. She is the consummate jazz artist and entertainer.
Bridgewater received two GRAMMY Awards for her tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, Dear Ella, and another one for her Billie Holiday tribute, Eleanora Fagan (1915-1959): To Billie With Love From Dee Dee. She also holds a Tony Award for her Broadway portrayal of “Glinda" in the The Wiz.
Dee Dee’s acclaimed recordings showcase her unique spin on the Great American Songbook. They also demonstrate her ability to explore various other genres, re-imagining them in a jazz context that is pure Bridgewater. Examples include Love And Peace, her tribute to the great jazz pianist and composer Horace Silver; Red Earth, an exploration of her own African roots in Mali; This Is New, a collection of Kurt Weill theatre songs; and J’Ai Deux Amours, an album of French songs in dedication to the country where she lived for several years. Her latest album, Dee Dee’s Feathers, pays homage to the city of New Orleans and its music.
The singer gained her first professional experience as a member of the legendary Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band, and throughout the ‘70s she performed with such jazz luminaries as Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon and Dizzy Gillespie. In addition to her appearance in The Wiz, she starred in the lead role of Billie Holiday in the off-Broadway production of Lady Day. Her other theatrical credits include Sophisticated Ladies, Carmen and Cabaret. Bridgewater is also widely known around the U.S. for her more than ten years as host of NPR’s award-winning JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater.
