In the early days of rap, Blowfly was the first performer to come out and make it all about sex. Even by today's standards Blowfly is pretty damn filthy. Since he started in the early '70s he's sported a low-rent supervillain outfit when performing. Originally, believe it or not, the costume was meant to protect his identity: by day he was Clarence H Reid, a highly respected and prolific R&B songwriter, and by night, he was Blowfly. As Reid, he penned songs for Sam & Dave, KC & the Sunshine Band, Betty Wright and countless others. These days, he's not concerned about protecting his real life identity. It's just that people really want to see his ridiculous X-rated alter ego perform in full outfit. Blowfly's biggest song was in the early '80s called "Rapp Dirty", a sort of perverted "Rapper's Delight". (Aaron Carnes)
