Startup Art Projects and Sofie Contemporary Arts are pleased to present "Between Logic and Light: Material and Meaning in Abstraction", a group exhibition featuring six contemporary artists whose practices explore abstraction as both a conceptual investigation and a material engagement. The show is a collaboration between Sofie and Startup Art and is curated by artist and Startup Director, Ray Beldner.
The exhibition is part of Startup Art's curatorial program and it features six Startup alumni artists; most of whom are local or Bay Area based: Jamie Bruson, Arminee Chahbazian, Cynthia Sumner, Delbar Azari, Fernando Carnauba, and Ray Beldner.
Ranging from carved stone and translucent sculptural installations to geometric painting and layered collage, the works in "Between Logic and Light" examines the dynamic intersection of form, process, and meaning. Each artist brings a distinct voice and approach to abstraction-drawing inspiration from sources as varied as architecture, nature, mathematics, meditation, and art history.
Highlights of the exhibition include:
* Jamie Bruson's architecturally inspired collages, composed of found and hand-painted papers, that capture the textures of memory, place, and time.
* Arminee Chahbazian's meditative stone sculptures, created through a ritualistic process of inlay and carving, which evoke resonance and primal narrative.
* Delbar Azari's luminous, reflective works that interact with space and light, echoing the ephemeral atmospheres of coastal California.
* Cynthia Sumner's richly layered compositions made with pigment, wax, and ink, revealing inner landscapes shaped by gesture and material play.
* Fernando Carnauba's mathematically driven paintings that explore symmetry, permutation, and visual rhythm-transforming logic into harmony.
* Ray Beldner's inventive collages that deconstruct and reassemble fragments of modernist art into playful, thought-provoking new compositions.
