The Berkeley Choro Ensemble (pronounced “shoro”) brings an excess of flair and swing to Brazilian choro music.
The world-class Bay Area musicians made their debut in January 2010, celebrating the music, culture and history of Brazil, with a special emphasis on the choro genre. Their repertoire also includes samba, bossa nova, jazz, and the music of Northeast Brazil.
Choro is a style of music that emerged in the 1800s, fusing the music of Brazil’s European immigrants and the native music of the indigenous and African-Brazilian population. The sound is akin to a combination of European classical music, ragtime, and blues.
