Benny Amon’s New Orleans Pearls

SEE EVENT DETAILS
A decade and a half ago, drummer Benny Amón--California born, raised and trained in jazz -- finished a music degree at UC Berkeley and left for New Orleans, where he lived and played for the ten years from 2011 to 2021, and where his love for the oldest jazz traditions was nurtured and flowered. Tonight, with the capable collaboration of two seasoned musicians, Marc Caparone and Jeff Hamilton, and a generational ally in the bassist Sam Rocha, Benny will deliver two generous sets of music reaching back to the earliest days of jazz.

In New Orleans, Benny performed regularly at Preservation Hall, Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro, The Palm Court Jazz Cafe, and aboard the Steamboat Natchez. Along the way, he has toured the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Japan, Belgium, Germany, Denmark and Sweden, performing in clubs and at jazz festivals that have included the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the Monterey Jazz Festival, Festival international I LOVE JAZZ in Brazil and the New Mexico Jazz Festival.

Benny is currently a Teaching Artist with the Preservation Hall Foundation and the Jazz In Schools program at Jazz at Lincoln Center. In the Bay Area, he regularly leads his own quartet playing New Orleans and classic jazz, as well as his trio that focuses on the music of the Ahmad Jamal trio, and is also the Musical Director for the South Bay Traditional Jazz Society.

The Bird & Beckett Cultural Legacy Project, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization presents live music at least 4 times a week at Bird & Beckett Books & Records in San Francisco's Glen Park village: 2 blocks from the Glen Park BART station, Muni lines J, 23, 35, 36, 44, and 52, and on- and off-ramps for I-580.

Seating is limited, so call ahead to reserve: (415) 586-3733. No advance ticket sales. Please bring cash. Venmo ok, if necessary. BYOB.
