Oakland artist and teacher Ben Belknap will launch his latest exhibition -- titled "Cave In" -- during a May 6 reception open to the public from 6-9 p.m. at The Compound Gallery in Emeryville.
More than 60 of Belknap's pieces -- featuring small-scale ceramic sculptures and richly glazed paintings -- will explore the artist's observations of people and places related to various interpretations of the exhibit title. The exhibit will also include pieces exploring plants, aquatic life, and ceramics, itself. His playful approach to his subject matter, use of unpredictable glaze textures and combinations, and ability to paint with underglaze, gives his work an expressive and unpredictable quality.
