Unplug and enjoy a peaceful, leisurely stroll through the art-adorned sidewalks of charming Carlmont Village Shopping Center at this open-air, annual event. Celebrate spring weather during your and walk among the work of more than 20 celebrated artists chatting with them about their showcased latest, original works.

Fine Jewelry

Aline Sar hand fabricates a small selection of metal jewelry. Her work is light and airy, organic and always whimsical. Clean and pure lines are her focus. She strays from traditional jewelry to simplify and to allow a design to unfold into its purest form. Her techniques include forging on a polished anvil, shaping and pic soldering. Mixing two different metals allows for contrast when working in a metal only medium, making the focus the design, not a stone setting. Each of Aline’s pieces achieves perfect alignment through the use of few lines built to create a modern style.

Ceramics

Eileen Goldenberg was 5 years old when she first touched clay and immediately fell in love. “Clay is a very immediate and plastic medium that allows me to fully express my feelings and emotions. The clay absorbs and then reflects what is going on for me,” she says. “Ceramics allows me to see how I am feeling. By combining texture, applied bumps, cut out windows and the graphic quality of sgraffito, I can turn ideas into forms that are a direct link to my inner landscape.” Sgraffito is a technique of carving through a black slip or glaze, revealing the clay underneath. Eileen uses either a very small loop tool that results in a very fine line, or a larger tool that gives bold, wide lines. Since she is hand-throwing porcelain, the lines appear white giving the appearance of drawing on clay.

Photography

For Locke Heemstra’s photographic images, the focus on landscapes is very much the part of expressing appreciation and awe of the natural world. He creates photographic canvases that have a unique artistic appearance as the image continues to fold around the sides to the back, eliminating the need for frames or glass. Locke’s early images focused on the natural wonders of the United States, from the rich fall foliage of New England to the vivid blues and greens of the California coast. In time, he began to concentrate on natural and manmade settings lush with color and eventually decided to combine his love of European culture with his new approach to color. Today Locke travels to Europe at least three times a year-- always searching for that special image that will give the viewer a sense of place.

The Sidewalk Fine Arts Festival takes place Saturday and Sunday, March 19-20, 2016 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at Carlmont Village Shopping Center, located on Ralston Avenue at Alameda de las Pulgas. The event is sponsored by the Carlmont Village Merchant Association.
