Bean Gilsdorf: Soft Histories

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) - closed (see times)
GRADUATE LECTURE SERIESBean Gilsdorf: Soft Histories
Bean Gilsdorf's sculptures and installations challenge the visual codes of American history. Her recent works function as portraits for the post-truth age: Stuffed body parts stand in for the individual, and hollow shells are unable to support the weight of their own depictions. Gilsdorf's practice sardonically addresses the cultural forces that inform the visual construction of history, undermining the idea that its orthodox forms of representation are legitimate.
Gilsdorf's projects have been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara and the American Textile History Museum, as well as exhibition spaces around the US and in Poland, England, Italy, China, and South Africa. Gilsdorf holds an MFA from California College of the Arts and she is the recipient of numerous grants and fellowships, including a Graduate Fellowship Residency at Headlands Center for the Arts and two Fulbright Fellowships to Poland.
