Bay Choral Guild Presents J. S. Bach's St. John Passion, an intensely vivid and dramatic portrayal of the passion of Christ and a true vocal and orchestral masterpiece. Bay Choral Guild's performance will be accompanied by the renowned Jubilate Orchestra, and a cast of the Bay Area's finest vocal soloists, with Corey Head as the Evangelist and Jeffrey Fields as Jesus. The arias will be sung by Tonia d'Amelio, soprano, Heidi Waterman, contralto, Michael Desnoyers, tenor, and Nikolas Nackley, baritone.
The St. John Passion predates the St. Matthew Passion and has the same general cast of characters: the Evangelist who tells the story, Jesus, the protagonist, and the four soloists who comment on the action. The soloist performances are the core of the piece, and they bring it to life with their command of the music and the emotion expressed in the individual solos.
The other actors, the members of the chorus, are the counterpoint, performing dual roles of the clamoring crowd as well as the followers of Jesus. Their challenge is to bring character to those groups, jumping back and forth between cruelty in "Crucify Him" and self righteousness in "We Have a Law". And then in the chorales expressing anguish over the pain and suffering inflicted on Jesus..
BCG audiences will recognize most of our superb soloists. Our soprano is singing with us for the first time, but our contralto and all of the men have sung with us in various performances in the past few years. Yhey all live in the Bay area and perform locally, nationally and internationally, with wide-ranging repertoires, from the concert stage to oratorio, opera and the frontiers of new music.
Please join us for a wonderful evening!
