Bay Choral Guild performs Mendelssohn's Elijah

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Whether you've heard it many times or never, don't miss Bay Choral Guild's presentation of Mendelssohn's Elijah on March 6, 7, and 8.
Mendelssohn's masterpiece was composed on the cusp of the transition from the Baroque to the Romantic periods. The choruses are modeled on Handel's works and include two of if not the two most gorgeous choral works ever written - "Lift Thine Eyes" and "He, Watching Over Israel". The arias are in a somewhat different style, displaying Mendelssohn's genius as an early Romantic composer. Our performance strives to recreate the premiere Elijah performance at England's Birmingham Festival in 1846, hence it will be sung in English and accompanied by 27 members of the Jubilate Orchestra, playing period instruments tuned to A430 -- neither the Baroque tuning of 415 nor the 440 of modern instruments.

The demanding role of Elijah will be sung by bass-baritone Bradley Ellingboe, acclaimed soloist, conductor, composer, and music educator. This is the first time Mr. Ellingboe, who is based in New Mexico, has performed with Bay Choral Guild, and we sought him out specifically for his experience in this role and for the vocal characteristics it demands. Also joining us will be Bay Area soloists Jennifer Ashworth, soprano, who performed with us in Brahms' Requiem, Heidi Waterman, alto, who performed with us in Bach's B Minor Mass, and James Hogan, tenor, whom you heard in our 2018-2019 Handel-Haydn Festival concert. We are excited to be able to share this music, and this orchestra and soloists, with you!

And don't miss Artistic Director Sanford Dole's pre-concert lecture 30 minutes before each performance. This ever-popular feature will give you new insights into Elijah and make the concert an even more enjoyable experience.
