The Book Arts Jam is a day-long celebration of book arts, print arts and paper arts presented by the Bay Area Book Artists (BABA). If you love books, the printing process, paper, collage, typewriters or anything else “bookish”, this is the event for you.
The day’s activities will include hands-on activities for young and old. Attendees can learn how to make a “passport” book, which can be taken from table to table to be stamped. A paper folding and cutting demonstration will provide passersby with creature cutouts and tiny-folded bracelets. Another station will provide materials to create Artist Trading Cards, and yet another station will offer poetry on demand. A printing press will be set up in the main hall to demonstrate the letterpress process.
The Member Gallery will showcase artist books of every sort: accordion books, pop-up books, books in boxes, miniature books and more. This year’s highlight is an entire section devoted to the Tea Bag. Books created during our monthly workshops will also be on display.
There will be over thirty vendors, including BABA members, selling everything from artist books, collages, wearable books, art supplies to ephemera and framed art.
Attendees can purchase donated books, art supplies, ephemera and artist books for flea market prices at the BABA Boutique. 100% of the Boutique sales go support the Book Jam.
Established in 1995, BABA is a Palo Alto-based group of independent artists, bound together by a passion for book arts. The community was founded to encourage book artist’s artistic growth and to share books and techniques. In 2002, BABA members organized the first Book Arts Jam to educate the public about books arts. BABA always welcomes new members. There are no dues or fees for membership and meetings are held monthly at Greendell School on the Cubberly High School Campus in Palo Alto.
