Barthold Kuijken, Baroque flute, with JungHae Kim, harpsichord

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Barthold Kuijken, Baroque flutist, and JungHae Kim, harpsichord, perform a recital of early music.

Barthold Kuijken is a Belgian flutist and recorder player known for playing Baroque music on historical instruments. His research on authentic instruments, collaboration with flute and recorder makers, and study of sources of the 17th and 18th centuries led him to specialize in performance on original instruments. For many years, he played in the Baroque orchestras Collegium Aureum and La Petite Bande. He has played in chamber music concerts all over the world, extending his repertoire to early 19th-century music, and has recorded extensively. He teaches Baroque flute at the Royal Conservatories of Brussels and The Hague. Since 2008, he has been artistic director of the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra.

JungHae Kim's unique style blends a sparkling virtuoso technique with a gentle and lyrical sensibility that makes the harpsichord instantly accessible to the modern ear.

Kim earned diplomas in harpsichord performance at the Peabody Institute, Oberlin Conservatory, and Sweelinck Conservatorium before completing her studies with Dutch master Gustav Leonhardt in Amsterdam. Kim has appeared as a soloist with period-instrument ensembles, as well as the San Francisco Symphony and New Century Chamber Orchestra.

As co-director of MusicSources (Center for Historically Informed Performance), Kim advocates for historical keyboard performance and has been active in bringing early music to the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2023, she will be performing with the world-renowned Baroque flutist Bart Kuijken at MusicSources and at Stanford University.

Kim is founder and artistic director of Ensemble Mirable, which has performed throughout the United States. Besides her recordings with Ensemble Mirable, Kim's discography includes albums featuring English virginal music, the keyboard music of Jean-Henri d'Anglebert, suites and fantasias of J.S. Bach; and Bach's harpsichord concertos.
