The high-energy, global music mash-up band known as Banda Magda hits the Firehouse Arts Center stage on Sunday, February 24, at 7:00 p.m. Lead by Greek-born composer, orchestrator, singer, and accordionist Magda Giannikou, Banda Magda does it all: South American rhythms, jazz improvisation, cinematic arrangements, plus the best of mid-century pop. The high-profile 5-person band glides from samba to French chansons, from Greek folk tunes to Colombian cumbia and Afro-Peruvian lando with consummate pizzazz.
Drawing on the band's global background (Greece, Argentina, Japan, Colombia, USA), the group of close musical friends formed Banda Magda in 2010 in New York, and has developed a dizzying international touring schedule, hitting 5 continents and over 20 countries yearly. Highlights include a spot on the Carnegie Hall Musical Explorers Series, WOMAD, The Kennedy Center, and countless top-tier jazz festivals. When not performing on stage, Banda Magda is in the recording studio, with three albums under their belt to date.
Trained in film scoring, arranging and music production at famed Berkelee College of Music in Boston, Magda has collaborated with everyone from Kronos Quartet (she was commissioned by and performed with the quartet at Lincoln Center 2013) to Snarky Puppy (participated in their Grammy Award Winning Family Dinner Vol.1).
