Born as Mark Gobeleza, DJ Mark G was born and raised in San Francisco CA, a place he describes as “the most unique place in the world.” His introduction into the performing arts began at an early age, as many of his family members were musically inclined. Following suit, he decided early on that he would learn to play an instrument. Unsure of what instrument to take on, a workshop at Amebas, showcased by DJ Qbert, became the deciding factor to make the turntable his instrument of choice.
Taking the name Mark G, a name that was given to him in elementary school, he started spinning at the age of 15. He drew influences from DJ Qbert who showed him that Filipino-Americans had a place in the Hip-Hop scene and DJ Static, a mentor and good friend who Mark G “has learned a lot from” and is trying to “imitate more.” Aside from playing Hip-Hop, Mark G also plays R&B, Freestyle but has his specialty in House music. Mark G describes his sound as “making a memorable moment” as if he “is telling a story.”
But perhaps it is the approach of Mark G that sets him apart from others. “I take a lot of risks every time I DJ and because of that risk, my style is different than others… I do follow certain styles of DJ'ing that influenced me but I put in my own flare. Through his 10 years of experience, he has DJ’d at venues such as Tiki Lounge in San Jose, Atmosphere in San Francisco, Temple Night Club in San Francisco, The Vinyl Room in Burlingame and Oodles Soju Bar and Lounge in San Francisco, a list he hopes to add to in the years to come. .
