Autonomous cars are no longer hypothetical! They are already sharing the road with you every day, even if you're not riding in one yourself. Since we last discussed Autonomy in 2016, Self-Driving has become cutting edge with driverless shuttles already running campus routes and predictions of self-driving taxis (NuTonomy in Singapore this year) through to fully integrated vehicles on public highways (Nvidia by 2022).
Capabilities for self-driving are improving exponentially. One key reason for rapid progress is that multiple trends from OUTSIDE the automotive industry are now playing a large role in advancing self-driving. Contributing trends include:
5G, low-latency mobile networks
In-car network improvements
Machine Vision
AI, Machine Learning, and Fleet Learning
Cloud Computing with Edge Computing
Smart Cities and Open Data
GIS systems and HD Maps
...oh, and Moore's Law, Kryder's Law, and Nielsen's Law
To address this, we bring together the Autotech Council community and Telecom Council's IoT Forum and ComTech-Expect the conversations to be wide-ranging as the technology promises to fundamentally change the jobs of drivers, the culture around community and personal mobility, sales, ownership, vehicle sharing, urban planning, energy and the environment.
