Join us for a celebration of Halifu Osumare‘s new book, Dancing in Blackness, A Memoir. Bay Area choreographer Raissa Simpson interviews Halifu about her dance work in the Oakland and San Francisco in the 70s and 80s, comparing the changing dynamics of Bay Area dance and race/culture. The conversation will be followed by a book signing.
Halifu Osumare, Ph.D. has been involved with dance and black popular culture internationally for over forty years as a dancer, choreographer, teacher, administrator and scholar. She is Professor Emerita of African American & African Studies at University of California, Davis, and has published two previous books on hip-hop.
Raissa Simpson is the Founder/Artistic Director of Push Dance Company in San Francisco, and is an interdisciplinary artist best known for her choreography and social activism.
