Delta Gallery presents works by Claire Smith and Ann Bernauer:
Claire Smith
Acrylic on Canvas
Claire Smith, born in 1969 Portsmouth England, works primarily in acrylic on canvas.
Her work focuses on capturing the beauty of nature by abstracting and refocusing the viewers’ perspective. Her work places the viewer in a dreamlike landscape of pure light, texture and shapes. Smith starts her process with photography, which she then digitally manipulates. After further refinement using digital sketches, Smith starts her development on canvas.
Smith studied in the UK at Falmouth School of Art, graduating in 1991 with a 1st class, BA Honors degree in Fine Art painting and printmaking. Smith moved to southern Norway in 1995 with her husband and first child. There she continued to make work, teach and have exhibitions. Her artwork is in many private residences in Norway, UK, Netherlands, Australia and the United States. Her works have been purchased by several establishments in the UK, including Falmouth University.
As an art educator, Smith has seen a need to redefine the way people access art, and an ambition to change the way people approach art. This has led to work being commissioned by several schools and being used to transform several public spaces in her hometown of Kristians and Norway. She has recently moved to Berkeley California, where she continues working on the simplified essence and stillness of nature.
Ann Bernauer
Oil Pastel
Ann Bernauer’s paintings embrace nature’s stillness by exploring the confluence of light and form. Her serene atmospheric images evoke a sense of calm and sanctuary. Bernauer works capture the essence of a place or moment in time: a paintbox sky at sunset or mysteries of fog-engulfed vistas. She replays the memory of these events, bringing them to life again on paper allowing the viewer to participate.
Bernauer, native to California, received a B.A. in Art History from Stanford University and continued her education in fine art at College of Marin, Kentfield, CA and La Romita School of Art, Terni, Italy. Bernauer has been showing her work in many exhibits over the years and her work is in private and corporate collections.
