Asking is a performance and public installation dedicated to the power of questions. Audiences are invited to contribute their own inquiries, if they so choose: to illuminate another person’s experience, to seek answers, to simply contemplate the unanswerable. Inspired in part by Quaker practices to reach difficult decisions and by seances practiced by spiritual mediums, both the performance and installation tempt audiences to quiet themselves and contemplate the unknown and unknowable.
Together, the performance and installation provoke audiences to consider the place our contemplative, vulnerable selves have within a larger society. What are the benefits and concomitant risks of sharing those aspects of ourselves publicly? What do we sacrifice by inhibiting them, as our high-speed society demands?
Oakland-based performance/theater artist and writer Christopher W. White makes work that reconfigures audience/performer boundaries and interrogates unacknowledged undercurrents to the American national psyche. As co-founding Artistic Director of SF’s experimental ensemble Mugwumpin, he co-created over 20 works, including Blockbuster Season, Luster (Asian Art Museum), The Great Big Also (Z Space), Future Motive Power. He was a 2016 Artist in Residence at Headlands Center for the Arts. Other collaborators: Campo Santo, Shotgun Players, EmSpace Dance, Magic Theater, Banana Bag & Bodice, SF Opera. White is also a bike advocate and educator with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. Publications: American Theatre, TheatreForum, Howlround. MFA: Naropa University/LISPA; BA: Yale University.
El Beh is a theatre artist, performer, musician, singer, composer, mover and educator. Beh has collaborated with many local companies including Berkeley Rep, California Shakespeare Theatre, The Curran, EmSpace Dance, Erika Chong Shuch Performance Project, SF Playhouse, YBCA, and Z Space among others. As Mizz Ellemenohpee Q. Arestiuvee, Beh is a co-host of Drag Spectacular Spectacular. She is a proud company member of Mugwumpin, Shotgun Players and detour dance. Their cello playing has been heard with such folks as The Bengsons, Taylor Mac, and the Bay Area Rainbow Symphony and she was named one of KQED’s 2017 Women to Watch. You can next catch them performing in Joe Goode’s Still Standing at the Haas-Lilienthal house this summer.
Leigh Rondon-Davis is a performer, visual artist, dramaturg, and playwright from both New York and the Bay Area. They attended Wellesley College and was a member of Oakland’s Laney College Fusion Theatre Project. Leigh’s previous performance credits include: Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again. (Crowded Fire Theater Company), Hidden: A Gender (Variance Festival), A 24-Decade History of Popular Music (Curran and Magic Theatre), The Niceties and Caught (Shotgun Players), and Dance of the Holy Ghosts(Ubuntu Theater Project). Leigh currently works for and is a Company Member at Ubuntu Theater Project in Oakland and Shotgun Players in Berkeley.
Teddy Hulsker is a San Francisco Bay Area born and based multidisciplinary theater artist, designer and also the program director of the artist ensemble Klanghaus. His recent design credits include The Effect at the San Francisco Playhouse, Precarious (2017) choreographed by Hope Mohr, In Case of Moon Disaster with Mugwumpin, and Warplay with NCTC. He received the Landisman Fellowship for Emerging Designer in 2012 and was awarded the Best Sound Design award by the BATCC in 2018. His installations and performances have been seen and felt in San Francisco, Oakland, Berlin, New York, Detroit, and LA. Recent original creations include the installation Disco Karaoke, which will be presented as part of SPF 11 and Barn Owl which was created in collaboration with playwright Evan Johnson. Additionally Teddy is the founder and director of the artist collective Klanghaus, a fiscally sponsored entity that hosts a unique monthly event showcasing artists of diverse mediums in an inclusive, creative and vibrant environment. His works often explore themes of collaboration, curiosity, creation, belief and fantasy. In 2016 Klanghaus was awarded the Theater Bay Area Grant and in 2017 it received Alternative Exposure’s Southern Exposure Grant.
