Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts Vocal Music and Orchestra Presents Brahm’s Requiem in honor of Draven McGill and John Igaz, student and alumnus who perished in the Ghost Ship Fire.
Within the traditional Requiem format of soloists, chorus and orchestra, Brahms replaced the ancient Latin Mass for the Dead with texts from Martin Luther's German translation of the Bible, resulting in a piece of contemporary art with a much more universal Humanist message of comfort. Rather than the more usual dogmatic focus on the fate of those who have died, Brahms' Requiem focuses on comforting the souls who remain on Earth and, through music and poetry, transforms grief into joy.
