It was in the United States during the '40s and '50s that Afro-Cuban jazz really developed. One of the style's biggest promoters and innovators was hard bop trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. Cuban-born trumpet player Arturo Sandoval says he idolized Gillespie as a young musician, and it shows. Sandoval's group, Irakere, which formed in the early '70s were among the first musicians in Cuba to bring the sounds of Afro-Cuban jazz to the island. Sandoval has penned some 200 compositions, and even had an HBO biopic produced about him (For Love or Country, starring Andy Garcia as Sandoval). Sandoval scored the film, for which he won an Emmy. - Aaron Carnes
