ArtSpan Panel Discussion: Fundraising for Independent Artists 
Exploring alternative funding strategies for visual artists. 
Tuesday, February 27, 6:30-8pm
at SOMArts Cultural Center934 Brannan Street, San Francisco 
Join us for a panel discussion on how to raise funds for your artistic practice beyond just selling your art - including how to cultivate direct relationships with local businesses; how to receive public funding from local and state governments; and how to raise charitable donations and grants as a nonprofit or with a fiscal sponsor.
 
PANELISTS:
Lisa BurgerPresident of the Board of Directors at Independent Arts & MediaAttorney at Lexington Law GroupIn addition to her work as President of the Board of Directors at Independent Arts & Media, Lisa is a nonprofit consultant in the areas of nonprofit formation, operations and early strategic development. She is also an attorney with the public interest law firm the Lexington Law Group, and an Advisory Council Member of The Crucible, a nonprofit industrial arts education center in Oakland.
Jo KreiterArtistic Director at Flyaway Productions and founder of GIRLFLYJo is a San Francisco-based choreographer with a background in political science. She thrives at the intersection of social justice and acrobatic spectacle. Through dance she engages imagination, physical innovation and the political conflicts we live within. In 1996 she founded her company, Flyaway Productions, an apparatus-based dance company that advances social issues in the public realm and explores the range and power of female physicality. Kreiter’s tools include community collaboration, a masterful use of place, a feminist lens and a body-based push against the constraints of gravity. 
Amy Kweskin
Amy is the founder of Artsightful: providing insights into the business of art through training, coaching and consulting. She specializes in streamlining business methodologies to create easily implementable action plans for artists, arts managers and board members to build thriving arts ventures and inspiring careers.
 
Amy authored the Strategic Planning chapter in the Center for Cultural Innovation’s Business of Art: An Artist’s Guide to Profitable Self-Employment – second edition. Currently, she is in partnership with Intersection for the Arts to develop and present their Accelerator professional development program running concurrently at Mills College and Intersection. She is a Co-Founder and current Chair of www.C2Arts.com: Consultants and Coaches for the Arts. Most recently Amy was a master trainer for The Launch Pad a 15-month arts cohort program providing training and coaching in Oakland. Since 2012 she has been an instructor for Saint Mary’s Liberal Education for Arts Professionals (LEAP). Additionally, Amy is a part time faculty member at The Art Institute of California – San Francisco teaching the business of art to Fashion and Advertising students.

Brian SingerArtist at Pacific Felt FactoryBrian (also known as “someguy”) is a San Francisco-based artist who has received international attention for his provocative social projects such at TWIT Spotting (Texting while in Traffic) and The 1000 Journals Project. He also cuts up books, and puts things on fences. Brian has served on the advisory board for the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery, and the national board of AIGA, the professional association for design. 
 
 
About ArtSpan Artist Workshops:
Artspan presents monthly 90 minute workshops designed to sharpen business and financial literacy for professional artists, prepare artists for exhibiting work inside and ouside the studio, and encourage community between fellow artis and the public. Through these community events, ArtSpan creates a platform for artists to thrive, fostering a Bay Area that values the arts. Workshops are free for all SF Open Studios Artists and Members, and SOMArts Artists. General Public $10 suggested donation. No one turned away for lack of funds. 
 
All events are held at SOMArts Cultural Center, 934 Brannan St, 94103, unless otherwise noted. ArtSpan participates in SOMArts’ Affordable Space Program, which provides below-market rental space, production and publicity assistance to arts and cultural organizations. For more information visit http://www.somarts.org/rentals/.
