Artists' Vocal Ensemble (AVE) is pleased to announce its upcoming, one-night-only, concert entitled "Kennedy!" At this concert, AVE commemorates three anniversary dates of November 22: the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy; the 100th birthday of British composer, Benjamin Britten; and the liturgical Feast Day of the patron saint of music, St. Cecilia. The concert takes place at 8:00 p.m. in the stunning acoustical setting of St. Ignatius Church, San Francisco, arguably the best acoustic in the Bay area for listening to choral music.
Of special interest at this concert, AVE has commissioned local Bay area composer, Aaron Gervais, to compose a 15 minute piece using JFK's Civil Rights speech (delivered from the Oval Office on June 11, 1963) and combining the actual voice of Kennedy with the living voices of AVE's exceptional singers. The performance of this piece, also entitled "Kennedy," will be a world premiere.
In addition, AVE will present its usual fare of music both ancient and modern. From the ancient world, the fifteenth century composer, Johannes Ockeghem, is featured with his remarkable setting of the Requiem. Benjamin Britten's Hymn to St. Cecilia takes advantage of two aspects of November 22. Herbert Howells' Motet on the Death of President Kennedy, employing a tremendously stirring text by Prudentius ("Take him, earth, for cherishing") is the other piece of the modern offerings at this concert. The concert is rounded off with three short Latin motets by Josquin, Tallis, and Vivanco.
Artists' Vocal Ensemble begins its tenth season composed of sixteen professional (mixed voice) singers under the direction of Grammy Award winner, Jonathan Dimmock.
